Conservation Hub
We built a zero to launch platform, called the Conservation Hub, that would aggregate conservation data to allow TNC staff to better understand the global impact our conversation work had on our 2030 goals. Key functions of the Hub include:
- Find and Share all project and strategy data that was contributing to TNCs 2030 Goals.
- Describe our conservation work
- Report progress toward outcomes and intermediate results
- Evaluate and track conservation impact
- Assess financial health
- Share information among fundraising and marketing teams
- Integrate with Business Intelligence and Finance tools
Data is automatically integrated with associated financial and funding (CRM) data. These data are then made available via interactive dashboards.
The project took 2 years, with collaboration among more than 100 stakeholders, 2 UX designers, 5 engineers and 2 QA specialists. I was responsible for discovery, design, research and requirements documentation. All documentation was in Jira and Confluence. We used a 2-week sprint cycle.
Two years post launch, we had achieved 88 percent adoption among our global teams. The remaining teams were actively preparing data to be incorporated into the Hub.
Robust Search Capabilities
We spent a lot of time getting our Portfolio search functionality right. After months of user testing and gathering feedback from site vistors, we enhanced the Portfolio Search to give users greater flexibility to find conservation information. We made it easier for users to differentiate between Strategies and Projects; search by outcomes or intermediate results; and we added geospatial mapping to allow users to toggle between a list view of all projects or a map view that allows staff to zoom in to specific regions of interest.
At a glance, staff can see which metric categories the project is working in: climate, land, freshwater, ocean or people.
We added breadcrumbs to increase usability; a people search to enable visitors to find relevant team members; and an advanced search that would enable team members to search by specific conservatoin tactics used, which has led to increased knowledge sharing among project teams.
Adding a Climate Calculator for more stable climate reporting
For climate metrics, TNC needed to better understand how the work was making an impact. Reporting progress was complicated for the reporter who typically didn’t understand climate science.
We designed a reporting mechanism that would calculate progress based on the NCS pathway, location, and spatial extent.
The result was a workflow that seamlessly blended with our current outcome metrics reporting tool and that noticeably improved the usability and successfully achieved our key outcomes.
Project Detail Pages that prioritized results
The Hub is primarily used for biannual Portfolio Reviews. Therefore, we designed the project detail pages to focus on Outcomes and Intermediate Results so reviewers could easily find how much progress had been made on the project; it’s target values; and starting points.
We prioritized the team component so staff could easily see who was working on the project and quickly contact them, or link to their profile page on TNC’s intranet.
If a staff member was listed as a team member on a project, they were automatically enabled to edit the record. The edit pages featured a secondary navigation to choose the page to edit and provided help text to inform the editor of TNCs guidelines for creating or editing a selected module.
As a Senior Product Manager, Wendy and team managed one of the most critical systems used by Nature Conservancy staff today. [The Conservation Hub] enables staff the ability to correlate and track conservation data for domestic and worldwide application. Her knowledge of the system was second to none. She demonstrated a high proficiency in understanding every aspect of the system which greatly benefited staff who required the system to do their jobs. I am confident, that as Wendy begins a new chapter of design and product management consultation, her clients will quickly realize how valuable she is and will trust her to create new or make better an existing product. Be her next client.
