Asia Pacific Data Repository

The Asia Pacific Team has decades worth of data from their Fish Biomass and Coral Health research.

Problem: Data live on hard drives and local servers thus there was no good way to share data among  TNC science teams worldwide.

Our Process: To kickoff our project to build the team their own data repository, we started with a series of Zoom calls with members of the Asia Pacific science team, conservation leadership, and Measures, Evaluation & Learning (MEL).

I facilitated the discussion and documented key points in Miro

Our first priority was to understand our audiences, and define outcomes, tasks and priorities per role. I led a lightning round visual design exercise where each team member brought examples of sites they were inspired by.

I created a requirements document, which we used to explore solution options and design a Proof of Concept to get stakeholder alignment

After a thorough gap analysis we vetted several solution options including:

building it inhouse,

  • using an open source tool such as Harvard Dataverse, or
  • a high-end, subscription-based data sharing platform.

Solution

My team proposed an AWS S3 storage solution coupled with a customized dataverse. We would build the landing page in-house.

Wendy is very intuitive, calm, and clearly articulates our needs. With her help, the excruciating process of going back and forth with business requirements became less burdensome. She gave us multiple solution options and clearly pointed out the pros and cons from each. I greatly appreciate working with Wendy. We’re currently rolling out the solution she recommended to a wider group of colleagues in Asia Pacific.
